HU Falls Twice In Second Day of UConn Classic

STORRS, Conn. – Howard volleyball (0-8) faced double defeats against the Connecticut Huskies (4-2) and the Holy Cross Crusaders (3-3) on the second day of the UConn Toyota Classic.

Set scores in the first match against UConn were 18-25, 4-25 and 18-25.

While Howard struggles to get their first win, the squad still shows improvement as the season moves forward.

Offensively, all-tournament selection Tosin Elebute led with eight of the teams' 23 kills, while Stephanie Shultis finished with 20 out of the teams 23 assists. Defensively, Riana Cain recorded 12 digs, and Jasmine Tipton followed with seven.

The Huskies stand-out contributors were Jordan Kirk and Mattison Quayl – who both finished with game high getting 10 kills. Angela Roidt dished out a game-best 35 assists. Defensively, Kelsey Maving had 22 digs – a game-high.

Set scores in the second match against Holy Cross were 15-25, 21-25 and 13-25.

Howard picked up its intensity, but it was not enough to defeat the Crusaders. Elebute recorded 11 kills, and Taylor Johnson chipped in with seven. In addition, Shultis dished out 25 assists and seven digs. Cain finished with team high 11 digs.

The Crusaders had four players in double digit stats. Kathleen Colpoys had 11 kills, Megan Lynch recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Elizabeth Watters ended with game high of 17 digs. Hannah Grace-Stokes tied HU's Shultis with 25 assists.

HU will be back in action September 9, facing Ivy League opponent Princeton University in the Rutgers Classic. First serve is set for 4:30 pm.
