Howard v. Maryland Eastern Shore
WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.howard-bison.com) – Howard University concluded its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekend with a five-set loss to Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday, Sept. 30 and a three-set loss to Delaware State on Friday, Sept. 28 in Washington, D.C., in Burr Gymnasium.
During Sunday action, HU held UMES, who are the 2011 MEAC defending champions, to a two-set deficit before UMES secured the next three sets for 18-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8 match win.
Bison sophomore Skyler Arbuckle guided the offense with 12 kills with four errors on 23 attempts, while fellow classmates Assata Conway and Stephanie Shultis tallied seven kills apiece. Shultis circulated a team-high 21 assists, as senior Jasmine King allocated 14 assists. Sophomore Alexis Skinner dominated the defensive portion of the contest and gathered 15 digs, while sophomore Destinee Harrison controlled the net with eight block assists.
Collectively, the mighty blue and white notched 40 kills with 20 errors on 132 attempts, 37 assists, three service aces, 48 digs and 11 team blocks.
On Friday, as Howard welcomed Delaware State for its home opener and MEAC opener, DSU attained its first conference win with scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-15.
Sophomore Meagan Lagerlef led HU with six kills, while Conway and Shultis added three kills apiece to the offensive effort. Shultis distributed 11 assists along with three service aces, as Skinner collected five digs.
Howard drops to 0-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
HU continues the season with a four-game MEAC road stint, taking on Hampton on Friday, Oct. 5 in Hampton, Va., at 6:00 p.m., Norfolk State on Sunday, Oct. 7 in Norfolk, Va., at 3:00 p.m., Coppin State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. in Baltimore, Md., and Morgan State on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3:00 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
