What is Carpal Tunnel Syndromme?

This is a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome. The main symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are numbness and pain in the fingers and palms.

Causative factors of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The median nerve is a crucial nerve present in the palms of our hands. The median and other nerves enter the palm through a small hole called the carpal tunnel in hand. Due to many reasons, the median nerve and other nerves passing through the carpal tunnel convolute and mix up with each other. The specific structure of your hand’s figures also results in this condition. Diabetes, Thyroid, Pregnancy, Anemia, Overuse of the joints, and injuries are also possible causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Continuous work by hand for long periods can cause the carpal tunnel to shrink. Frequent contact with intensely moving machines, computer mouse use, driving, manual labor, and other tasks can also result in this illness. The disease is more likely to increase at night due to the pressure we apply on our hands during sleep. If not treated on time, the condition can severely affect the hands and lead to paralysis.

Symptoms

Numbness of the hands is the main symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome. All fingers except the little finger and palm may experience numbness. You may feel numb when using the phone, holding the steering wheel, knife, and computer mouse. Freezing is more common at night and when you wake up in the morning. Fingers and palms appear to be pale and tired with numbness. As the disease progresses, the fingers become weaker.

Who is mainly affected by carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome mainly affects homemakers who work without taking any rest. The disease is more common in women than men. Women’s physical characteristics and body mechanisms can cause this disease. The disease is also common among pregnant women. Carpal tunnel syndrome appears in women even after menopause. Pregnancy and menopause are two conditions in which there is an imbalance in water content in the body. In addition, people who are obese, affected with thyroid, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and kidney diseases are more likely to develop it. As our lifestyle and working conditions change, this disease occurs in the new generation. Carpal tunnel syndrome is more likely to occur in people working with computers that use a mouse keyboard regularly.

How to diagnose Carpal Tunnel syndrome?

Diagnosis can be made by understanding the symptoms of the disease. Detailed physical examination and tests such as X-rays to determine the condition of the bones are used to detect the disease. Electro mammograms and nerve conduction studies can also be relied upon for diagnosis.

When and how to treat?

Treatment should begin as soon as symptoms start to appear. Good rest is required along with treatment. Also, ensure that the hands and arms are getting adequate rest. Do not ignore the disease or stop treatments mid-way. Do not indulge in stressful hand activities during the treatment period. If the condition is not taken seriously, the hands may become weak and may even lead to paralysis of hands. Modification of the lifestyle benefits the relief of this disease. Ensure effective treatment of other major diseases which results in carpal tunnel syndrome.

How To Prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Through Lifestyle Adjustment?

This disease is prevented by evaluating the lifestyle that causes it and making moderate adjustments to it. Those who regularly do manual work should give proper rest to the joints at regular intervals. It is good to reduce the amount of salt in the diet. People with anemia are more prone to carpal tunnel syndrome and need adequate nutrition by eating healthy, nutrient-rich food. It is recommended to use hand gloves to avoid getting cold during the winter season. Do not bend or straighten the arms excessively. Avoid picking up or carrying heavy loads. Adjust the computer mouse to the height of the elbow joint.

Ayurvedic treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Ayurveda considers this disease a rheumatic disease. The powder used to treat rheumatism is mixed in boiling water and applied ( tolerable heated mixture) around wrists during the daytime.

Heat herbal oils like murivenna and karpooradi and apply them to the affected area to reduce pain. After this ointment, wrap your hands in a cloth and leave it overnight. This ointment is not recommended for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Instead, they can make a kizhi by heating rice bran and sand, tying them in a cloth, and holding them in place. Regular treatments like this and proper rest are the main action that Ayurveda recommends for treating carpal tunnel syndrome.

Proper internal medicine balances the vitiated Vata and strengthens the nerves. Externally panchakarma therapies like virechanam and vasthi are given after snehana swedhana procedures to cleanse the gut and eliminate toxins that cause Vata imbalance.

These treatments will give good relief from pain, swelling, and numbness .shashitapinda swedhanam can strengthen the ligaments and muscles associated. A wrist splint is sometimes suggested for immobilization of the wrist joint till it heels. Oil Dhara for wrist and abhyanga(oil massage)is given.
